What is Advantage for dogs and cats?

Advantage spot-on is a fast and effective topical flea treatment for dogs and cats.

Unlike oral treatments, spot-ons such as Advantage are not absorbed into your pet’s bloodstream. Fleas are killed on contact with your pet’s skin, instead of when they bite. Adult fleas are killed as they emerge, breaking the breeding cycle and helping to control flea infestations.

Advantage also helps to reduce flea allergy dermatitis on pets, and control biting lice on dogs.

Benefits

  • Canine and feline formula is great for multi-pet households
  • Kills fleas on contact
  • Safe for use on pregnant, breeding and lactating animals

Is Advantage suitable for my pet?

Advantage spot-on is suitable for use on dogs and cats over 8 weeks of age, and is safe for use on pregnant, lactating or breeding pets. Unweaned puppies and kittens should not be treated separately, as treatment of the mother will protect the litter.

Dosage Schedule

Advantage spot-on is a topical treatment to be applied every four weeks, with the dosage based on your pet’s body weight.

Advantage for dogs

Body weight Pipette size (ml) Total Imidacloprid (mg)
Under 8.8 lbs(4 kg) 0.4 40
8.8-22 lbs (4-10 kg) 1.0 100
22-55 lbs (10-25 kg) 2.5 250
Over 55 lbs (25 kg) 4.0 400

Advantage for cats

Body weight Pipette size (ml) Total Imidacloprid (mg)
Under 8.8lbs (4 kg) 0.4 40
Over 8.8 lbs (4kg) 0.8 80

Apply the entire pipette as a single dose. Animals of different sizes require different modes of application to ensure the product is evenly distributed, so it is important to follow the instructions on the packet carefully.

What are the side effects of Advantage?

Dogs and cats treated with the same dosage of Advantage may react differently to the product.

Side effects reported include skin reactions such as hair loss, redness, itching and skin lesions may occur. Agitation and disorientation have also been reported.

What precautions must be taken?

  • For external use only.
  • Keep out of reach of children and animals.
  • Not for human use.
  • Do not allow recently treated pets to groom each other.
  • Not for use on dogs or cats under 8 weeks of age.
  • Do not apply to damaged skin.

How effective is Advantage (Imidacloprid)?

Fleas are killed within one day following treatment. One treatment prevents further flea infestation for up to four weeks on dogs, three to four weeks on cats and up to one week on pet rabbits. The product can be used as part of a treatment strategy for Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD) in the cat and the dog, where this has been previously diagnosed by a veterinary surgeon.

Very effective treatment for fleas and ticks
I use this on my cat, who is an indoor/outdoor feline. He loves to be outside during the day while I'm at work and this product does the job very nicely. I've never seen a flea or tick on him nor has he had any side effects from it. Definitely recommend.
